The one key test you need to take before you start paying Child Support

Up to very recently we didn’t really have a reliable way of conclusively establishing whether a man accused of being a father of a child was indeed the father. A long hard look at the child and the father would give some indication of whether a relationship existed or not but this was fraught with error and nothing more than an estimate at best.

Over the past 10 years this has dramatically changed and the balance has now tipped towards the provision of conclusive and compelling evidence of biological relationships.

Paternity testing based on DNA technology has dramatically changed the way in which we determine biological relationships and has allowed the provision of clear outcomes in determining paternity. The testing process is very simple; you provide swabs from the inside of your mouth which contains cellular material for DNA analysis. Three samples are required one each from the child mother and the suspected father. In fact if the mothers sample is not available a test can still be performed but the analysis and interpretation of the result is slightly more complicated than it need be.

The samples are sent to a specialist testing centre where DNA is extracted and analysed from the samples. The results are expressed as either a conclusive ‘no-match’ or a ‘match’ which comes with a significance level based on a number commonly called the paternity index. The ‘no-match’ result is absolute as long as the scientific testing has been conducted by a reputable and authorised testing facility which has been accredited to the appropriate standard. Similarly the ‘match’ scenario is normally expressed as a percentage certainty normally in the region of greater than 99.99%.

If the results come back as ‘no-match’ and you’re currently paying Child Support – Stop. You are not the father of the child you are supporting.Conversely if the results come back as a ‘match’ go ahead and fulfil your responsibility you’re almost certainly the father of the child. If you want to find out more follow the links in the author resource box below.
